The use of a hydrant sends large volumes of water through the system over a short amount of time stirring up sediment in the reservoir and water lines.   The water quality will improve as settling occurs.  Slowly running your cold water tap will help to clear the water.  The fire department has been asked to only use the particular hydrant to fight a fire and not for practice purposes.
