The CVRD had planned for a 4% garbage disposal fee increase in early 2022. However, a 11% increase will be in effect as of June 1 to offset the higher than expected fuel costs and account for the rising costs of landfilling regional garbage.
Beginning June 1, 2022, these new disposal fees will apply:
- Garbage: $164/tonne
- Food Waste: $125/tonne
- Mattresses: $15/unit
- Tires with Rims: $6/unit
- Commercial Yard Waste: $60/tonne. *Residents will still have free yard waste disposal.
While neighbouring jurisdictions charge for yard waste disposal, the CVRD has offered a free disposal service to residential and commercial customers. As processing costs are rising, the CVRD is receiving higher disposal volumes from regional and out-of-region commercial customers. This has put additional stress on the budget, which necessitates a commercial yard waste fee to ensure the program remains free to residents.
The CVRD understands that residents and businesses have faced many challenges over the last 2 years and increases to waste disposal may feel like an additional burden. Increasing the disposal fees at this time was a difficult but necessary decision to balance the solid waste budget.
